Photography Lab

Photography Lab - Now You Can Have One In Your Own Home

If you have your own photography lab at home, then you do not have to go through the hassle of bringing your film to have it developed professionally. With your own photography lab, you also have more control with the outcome of the photographs (e.g., whether you want more contrast or finer grain, etc.) since you will be doing all the developing yourself.

What You Need to Set Up a Photography Lab

First, every photography lab needs a developing tank. You can easily find out that will develop both 120 mm and 35 mm film. A developing tank comes with a black lid which you can open to place chemicals inside but will not allow any light to enter. Although most tanks can hold one to two rolls of film at a time, you can opt for larger ones if you take photographs in large quantities.

Loading the film into the developing tank can be done inside a changing bag or a cupboard but whichever method you choose, it has to be in an area that is completely dark. Never make the mistake of loading film in a changing bag while standing in broad daylight because your film will definitely get exposed.

Your photography lab will also need a thermometer, shallow basins to place the photographs and the chemicals for developing, which can be bought in any photography store. A piece of string needs to be placed inside your photography lab since this is where you will place the photographs and allow them to dry. Special hanging clips for photography or ordinary laundry pegs will both work just as well inside your photography lab. The string has to be placed where there is little dust and where it can be kept undisturbed while drying.

You also need to take into account how you will dispose of the chemicals that you use in your photography lab. Although small quantities of these chemicals can be disposed of through the drain, the larger amounts may pose some environmental and drainage problems in the long run. You may want to consult with the authorities in your neighborhood for assistance on these matters.
