Photography Career

Do You Have What it Takes to Launch a Successful Photography Career?

A photography career is very different from someone who dabbles in photography on the side as a hobby. A photography career entails a deeper level of commitment and discipline and is most suitable for someone who is willing to travel, enjoys meeting new people, will not mind working irregular hours and is creative in a visual sense. If you still think that you fit the criteria, then read on about a photography career and choosing the right area of photography for you.

Photography Career - Where Do You Fit In?

The most common photography career is general photography, where you will work from a studio or from your home. If you are averse to traveling far, then general photography is suitable for you since you will mostly be taking photographs of local events such as weddings and parties. You may also engage in portraiture photography for the people in your city or community.

Another type of photography career is commercial photography, wherein you will be involved in stock photographs, oftentimes of products for a catalogue, the interior or exterior of homes and buildings for documentation and other photographs used for public relations purposes.

Advertising photography is another kind of photography career, wherein photographs are used for promotional or marketing purposes. In this line of photography, you will need a lot of creative input while working with a large team of models, assistants, brand managers and crew. This is a very lucrative field to get into since corporations and companies that advertise often have large budgets set aside for marketing. You usually get the opportunity to have your photographs featured in print advertisements and billboards. If you want a photography career in this field, then you will have to start as an assistant of an established photographer to get knowledge and experience.

Aside from these three, there are other areas of photography which you can enter, depending on your interests and expertise. Regardless of what area you are interested in, it is always helpful to take courses in photography so that you have a good foundation of the basic techniques which will be beneficial in developing your own style in your photography career.
